Tips for Moving Furniture

Whether you’re relocating or just rearranging, moving heavy furniture is a difficult job. Use these simple techniques to move heavy, awkward items without wrecking your back, your house or the furniture.

First, Plan Where it Lands

This is obvious when moving to a new house but definitely helps even when just rearanging items. It helps get a view of the bigger picture and where each piece will look and function best.

Carry Tall Items High and Low

Tallboys, chests, hutches and all large furniture is difficult to handle. The first step is, make it a two-person job. Lifting furniture rather than dragging is a lot easier on yourself, your house and your furniture. Tip the item backward at an angle and have one person carry the top while the other carries the bottom. This centers the weight and prevents the furniture from swinging. This will also make it easier for transporting the item up or down stairs, since the carrying angle will be similar to the slope of the stairs.

Protect Your Furniture

When moving house ensure you cover all wooden furniture in blankets and shrinkwrap for the journey. Despite how careful you or the delivery staff are, accidents can happen and blankets provide enough cover to absorb most unintended bumps and dents.

Make a Mattress Sling

Mattresses can be awkward to carry so this is a very handy trick of the trade. Make a mattress sling as shown with a piece of rope and tubing for handles.

Lift, not Drag

Tables, beds and other items with legs need to be lifted rather than dragged. Dragging a bed or table could loosen the joints.
