Wood Types – How to choose the right furniture

There is a large variety of different wood types and styles in the New Zealand furniture market which vary significantly in price. From low cost MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) or particle board right through to high quality solid timber such as Rimu, Ash and Oak, what is the difference between them and why do I need to know about them?

A brief and to-the-point answer is that often the lower cost bracket of wooden or fake wooden furniture is imported and manufactured in large runs of standard sizes, colours and handles. Manufacturers are able to produce this at a low cost by using low cost material, hardware and using economies of scale through doing large runs of the same product at one time. The result is most often a timber veneer on MDF or particle board available in only a few colours with no option to customise.

The majority of our furniture is made from Radiata Pine timber which is sourced from sustainable local forestries. Radiata Pine is used extensively in the furniture manufacturing industry, being easy to work with and a having a great looking grain. We also use American White Ash timber which is available in our Mckenzie and Frank ranges. American White Ash has a more definite grain which shows up beautifully with any of our stains. Being a New Zealand manufacturer, we are able to make-to-order which opens up a great range of customization options.

With the ability to custom size, choose your handle, choose your stain or paint finish, or even stain-match to your existing furniture, you can tailor any of our ranges to suit your home!

Dear Coastwood furniture makers
Yesterday I picked up my two Calais bedside cabinets and I would like you to know that I am delighted with them. The design, workmanship and appearance are all perfect for me. Given lock-down, they even arrived before I expected them.

Gaylia

We recently purchased a customised entertainment unit from you. We are very happy with the end product and would highly recommend your company.

Hello team, Just a note to thank you all for the beautiful bedroom suite you made for me. I ordered my set through Big Save in Dunedin. It was from the Nordic collection with a customised Moana headboard. I changed my mind over the side cabinets deciding on having all drawers instead of a single one. The result is wonderful. I love it and so do my friends. Your workmanship is faultless and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the quality and skills of your craftsmen. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas.

I just wanted to send you our completed buffet in situ at home today.  Your team made it to our specifications and it is perfect as a modern piece of furniture to house my precious crockery etc.

We just love it:)

Thanks again, Sharleen Howison
